The Difference Between Talking and Having

There was all this training at work about talking about your mental health. We had posters and speakers and it was all really good stuff. Yet when I came back to work after a bad patch, I felt really awkward. No one said anything. I got the sense that the team were really annoyed at having to pick up the slack while I was out. It just showed me that there’s a world of a difference between talking about mental health and having an actual problem with it.

We all say how stressed we feel, how anxious we may be, or how we’re depressed about what’s happening for us now.

But such talk is a world away from the physical and psychological pain that stress, anxiety and depression can cause.

So it’s important for us to be clear – particularly when we are all called to talk more about our mental health.

What are we looking for when we talk about mental health?

What do those conversations look and sound like?

How do they help?

And what happens to people after the conversation is finished?

AN ORGANISATIONAL STRATEGY FOR SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING HAS TO BE MORE THAN A BOX TICKING EXERCISE

See The Person – Not The Label

It’s about seeing people for who they are and recognising how they can develop themselves and contribute to the teams and the workplace.

A meaningful organisational response needs to include ways of:

  • Seeing the person and not the label or diagnosis
  • Providing meaningful ways of supporting the individual while meeting the demands of works
  • Identifying how the work-place may be contributing to the problem
  • Building trust and fairness
  • Managing boundaries between personal information and work relationships
  • Creating a wider culture that appreciates people for who they are

There are four points of entry for developing a suitable mental health strategy for your workplace

  • STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT
  • TRAININGS & WORKSHOPS for MANAGERS & STAFF
  • SUPPORTS & INTERVENTIONS – DEALING WITH INDIVIDUAL SITUATIONS
  • WORKPLACE AUDIT & REVIEW – HOW WELL ARE WE ACHIEVING OUR  OBJECTIVES
